Who We Are

Leeds Caribbean and African Centre (formally Leeds West Indian) based in Chapeltown, Leeds is very proud of its humble beginnings opening in 1983, after long-standing racial tensions. It became a hub in the community for the Caribbean community and all these years later it remains a hub in the community for the Caribbean and African communities.

We recognise the hard work and sacrifice of our brothers and sisters who came before us to create and maintain the foundation of the centre and as LC&AC is based in the heart of Chapeltown, we understand it is a hub for our community. Our values are inclusivity, collaboration and community engagement.

It serves as a hub for social interaction, education, cultural enrichment, support and fostering a sense of belonging and unity among the locals and wider community.

We create an equal relationship with our users and we are committed to ensuring that the values of the centre are reinforced when anyone enters the centre.

Here we aim to protect the heritage and culture of these communities and embrace the spirit and its vibrant energy going forward. As well as being central to creating unity within them, a centre for the people delivered by the people which is our strength.

We strive for the Centre to become sustainable financially and socially for generations to come.

Our collaborations at the centre are not just about our past; it's about our future. It's part of our broader commitment to recognising, celebrating and embracing the LCAC and the community. As well as bringing together esteemed community elders and young people whose presence and wisdom are truly valued.
